After sitting out the IndyCar season opener March 26, former Roscoe resident Danica Patrick finished sixth at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Fla., April 2.
Patricks sixth-place finish on the road course ties the second-best finish of her career. In 2005, she finished fourth at Twin Ring Montegi and Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and sixth at Chicagoland. She was 12th at St. Petersburg last year.
Patrick and Rahal Letterman Racing teammate Buddy Rice withdrew from the season opener at Homestead-Miami, Fla., after their teammate, rookie Paul Dana, was killed in pre-race warm-ups.
Helio Castroneves took the checkered flag at St. Petersburg after leading 40 of the 100 laps. Scott Dixon, who led 36 laps, finished second. Tony Kanaan, Bryan Herta and Vitor Meira rounded out the top five.
Top five in the season point standings after the second race are as follows: 1. Castroneves, 93; 2. Dixon, 70; 3. Dan Wheldon, 64; 4. Sam Hornish Jr., 62; 5. Kosuke Matsuura, 54. Patrick is 14th with 35 points.
Next race is the Indy Japan 300 Saturday, April 22 at Twin Ring Montegi in Montegi, Japan. Race starts at 11 a.m., and will be broadcast on ESPN.
