For the second weekend in a row, Roscoe native Danica Patrick has had tire problems. Both incidents cost her a chance at a top-five finish, and possibly even her first win.
She looked as though she might be heading for the first checkered flag of her career at the Michigan International Speedway Aug. 5 when a blown tire forced her from a possible win to a seventh-place finish. She led that race twice for a total of five laps.
Nearly the same thing happened again this past weekend in Kentucky. Saturday, Aug. 11, she looked as though her car was headed for a top-five finishuntil her car spun as she was coming back onto the racing surface following a pit stop. After she was able to get her black Motorola No. 7 back under control, she lost a right rear tire. That forced her out of control again, this time sent her into the backstretch wall. Instead of a possible top-five finish, she came home 16th.
Only three races remain in the Indy Racing League schedule. The next race is the Motorola Indy 300 Aug. 26 at the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. The series then heads to Detroit Sunday Sept. 2, for the Detroit Indy Grand Prix on Belle Isle. The final race of the season will be Sunday, Sept. 9 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet.
If it doesnt happen before, I think it would be great if she could earn her first victory here in Illinois. Next to Milwaukee, Joliet is the closest Patrick ever gets to race to this area. It would be as close as she could come to winning in front of her hometown fans. That would make for a terrific storybook ending to her 2007 season. Is that too cheesy to wish for? I dont think so; Ill be rooting for her!
