Danica’s visit raises $32,000 for MDA

If you’re upset because you couldn’t make it to Road Ranger Stadium to meet Danica Patrick May 30, you might want to consider making plans for next year.

“That’s the plan,” said MaryAnn McLarty, program coordinator for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and Patrick’s best friend. “This is the second year we’ve done it, and as long as her schedule allows for her to be here during a home game, I think we’ll keep seeing her.”

The MDA describes itself as a volunteer health agency aimed at combating more than 40 neuromuscular diseases through worldwide research. It is funded almost entirely by individual, private contributions, which is why McLarty said it is so helpful to have a big-name celebrity like Patrick at events such as the jersey auction.

“Two years ago when we did this jersey event, we raised $6,000,” McLarty said. “We brought in Danica Patrick last year, and raised $30,000. “Just having that name and face that people want to come see, really helps.”

Since the stadium is so close to Patrick’s home in Roscoe, she said it is easy for her to attend the auction while she is around the area. It raised almost $32,000 this year.

“I would say we kind of picked each other,” Patrick said. “The marriage of the two works very well, and it’s a good cause.”
