The old Amerock building in downtown Rockford was the site of a “firefighter challenge” event last weekend. As firefighters rappelled down the building, large chunks of the building’s surface began to dislodge and fall to the ground. Mathis Development announced May 31 plans to transform the landmark property into market-rate and luxury condos. City of Rockford Communications Director John Standin said the city had closed the east and south sidewalks of the building and notified the building’s owners of the situation.
