Saturday, May 21 at 2 p.m., the community is invited to celebrate and re-dedicate the newly renovated Playworks 2 playground in Liberty Park, located at the corner of Central Avenue and Morgan Street in southwest Rockford. The re-dedication party will feature music, speakers, and a free lunch provided by Famous Daves. Highlights will include Lil Wilbur, Famous Daves mascot, and a ribbon breaking led by children.
Fifteen years ago, more than 1,600 church and community volunteers gathered at Liberty Park in southwest Rockford to construct the citys second wooden Robert Leathers-designed playground. The playland of pirate ships, dragons, and mazes was built in five days, with volunteers running saws, hauling gravel, building slides, washing tires, and serving food. The project, spearheaded by Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries in cooperation with the Rockford Park District, included a successful community-wide million penny campaign to help fund the $60,000 project.
During the days prior to the re-dedication party (which mirror the original construction dates), the playground will receive a facelift and safety upgrades by volunteers and Park District staff. These efforts will conclude with the re-dedication party.
Everyone is invited to attend the festive event. Original Playworks 2 committee members and children and adults who helped build the playground 15 years ago are especially encouraged to return.
