There is a larger than usual number of parcels indicating unpaid property taxes for either or both of the tax installments this year. Today parcels numbering over 8,000 have outstanding taxes. Last year, there were 6,500 parcels delinquent at this time.
Winnebago County Treasurer Sue Goral reminds taxpayers that the deadline to avoid publication or mailing of certified delinquent taxes is Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002. Taxpayers who want to avoid publication of their names and properties in the paper must pay their taxes no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Once this date passes, all names and properties with unpaid taxes will be published, and certified letters will be mailed to those delinquent property owners. An additional $10 fee per delinquent property will be applied to cover the cost of the delinquent property publication and certified mailing. Taxpayers should contact the treasurers office as soon as possible to get the current amount owed on their property and to make payments.
