Discovery Center offers engineering fun for youth

Every product we use and every task we undertake, from riding a bike to folding the laundry, from eating breakfast to going shopping, involves an element of engineering. Local engineering feats will be showcased at Discovery Center Museum Saturday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will celebrate National Engineers’ Week.

“Discovery Engineering” offers elementary and middle school-age children and their families the opportunity to take part in numerous experiments and hands-on activities, such as designing and testing catapults and straw rockets, watch demonstrations, talk with engineers from area companies, and take part in a live science show. Cost is included with admission to the Museum—$5 adults; $4 children ages 2-17; and free to Museum members and children younger than age 2.

Engineers from local companies including, Gunite, Haldex Barnes, Southern Imperial, Monogram Systems, Bauer CAD/CAM Services Inc., NDK Crystals Inc., Rockford Associates, and CISCO, along with members of the local professional engineering societies including the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers, Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Society for Quality, will be on hand to provide demonstrations, hands-on activities and general information. The U.S. First Robotics Team from Christian Life High School will showcase their robot and excite youth about the world of robotics. At 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., there will be live shows with science and engineering exploits sure to amaze the whole family.

National Engineers Week is dedicated to encouraging pre-college interest in science, technology and engineering. For more information on the world of engineering, check out or
