Downtown post office moves carriers

Notice the extra empty space at the downtown post office? If you’ve been doing any business at 401 S. Main St., the downtown postal branch, you might have seen the wide open spaces. On Aug. 30, the carriers were moved out permanently. Michelle Zyvert, customer service relations coordinator, explained: “When we moved the carriers out, we mailed a postcard to every address in 61102 because those were the only carriers that were moved. We kept all our rental post office boxes. To the customer, it’s seamless. They can still come in and buy postage and get mail at their post office boxes.” Some people wondered whether bulk mail would also be moved out, or whether the downtown post office might even be closed. “They look at many options,” Zyvert said. “We try to find out what might be the best for our operational needs. It’s not something that there has been a decision made.” What about bulk mail? “Bulk mail is not affected at this time,” said Zyvert. “They are looking at many options. It’s still open. They may have many other things in the hopper, but right now, we don’t know.” Watch the mail for any developments.
