Elite Defense Systems, a self-defense center c/o the EDS Companies Inc., is opening an office in Rockford. The company will offer classes at Rock Valley College on Bell School Road.
Matt Numerich, owner and head instructor, explained how his self-defense school differs greatly from every other school in the Rockford area. First, we focus only on adult self-defense, as most other schools focus on youth programs, he said. Second, we focus on true street self-defense as opposed to tournament, sport or traditional instruction. In todays 9/11 environment, we have had an explosion of growth, as adults have realized they need simple and effective self-defense, which is not their kids karate class.
People still remember martial arts legend Bruce Lee, through his part in the Green Hornet or various fighting roles in movies. A few people still practice another legacy he left, his self-defense philosophy of Jeet Kune Do (JKD).
JKD is a mixture of more than two dozen arts, including ju jitsu, kickboxing, and other elements. Lee did not focus on how to win tournaments, but how to defend oneself out in the street. As a result, many people today find it to be a perfect fit for the novice or anyone wanting to feel safer and become skilled in a short period of time.
Once you cross east over the Rocky Mountains, there are not many places where JKD is taught. One reason is that there are not many certified instructors available. Elite Defense Systems (EDS) teaches Bruce Lees art of JKD.
The class will be offered through Rock Valley College from March 21 to April 25. A free demonstration will be given from 8 to 9 p.m., March 14. Both the classes and the demo will be held at Rock Valley College on Bell School Road. The class costs $91. For more information, call (815) 885-4758, or check out www.EliteJKD.com.
