EPA hosts used tire, motor oil collection Aug. 27-28

OREGON—The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department is encouraging residents to take advantage of this opportunity to rid their yards, barns and garages of used scrap tires and non-contaminated used motor oil. The collection event will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Aug. 27, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Ogle County Fair Grounds, 1440 N. Limekiln Rd., Oregon. There is no charge for this event. Tire owners will be expected to help unload the tires they bring.

Passenger car, truck and tractor tires will be accepted from private homes and farms. The Illinois EPA will require each participant to sign an agreement in which they agree not to accumulate tires in the future. Each participant is expected to use this service one time only. Names will be checked against lists of participants from previous tire collection events.

Anyone having more than 1,000 tires is asked to please call the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department to make special arrangements.

Tires will not be accepted from tire dealers, commercial trucking or busing companies. Large industrial or off-road tires will not be accepted.

Used motor oil and oil filters will be accepted for recycling. Used motor oil stored in barrels will be pumped out while you wait. All containers will be drained and returned to each participant. Please do not bring antifreeze or other hazardous materials to this collection event. The used oil should be free of water, gasoline, antifreeze or other contaminants.

Volunteers are needed to help unload tires. Those interested are asked to please call the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department. Each volunteer will receive a T-shirt. Lunch and snacks will be provided.
