Equestrian Apprentice Program

Equestrian Apprentice Program

By Troy DeCook, Rockford Park District

Are you familiar with horseback riding? Or would you like to learn? The Rockford Park District is offering an Equestrian Apprentice Program at Lockwood Park.

The program consists of two different phases. The first phase introduces the basics of horse care and stable management; duties include anything from grooming horses to assisting a riding instructor. The second phase is for advanced riders with strong riding skills, solid people skills and for those who enjoy working with kids and adults. Duties consist of being able to perform jobs such as hosting birthday parties and running the pony ring, with minimal supervision.

The Equestrian Apprentice Program is for individuals 13 or older and costs $25 for the season. The program will be held at Lockwood Park, Trailside Equestrian Centre, 5209 Safford Road.
