Celebrate our independence all over the city this week with events for the whole family! The Rockford Speedway hosts events Saturday, June 30, and Tuesday, July 3. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series is set for June 30; races July 3 also offer a 10,000-watt fireworks extravaganza.

The Boy Scouts of America will honorably dispose of American flags next to the Symbol at Sinnissippi Park at 5 p.m., July 3. Cross the street a few hours later to see the Rockford Concert Band at the Music Shell for free!

On the holiday itself, MELD is holding an 8K Run, 1-Mile Walk, 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk. The races start at Madison Street beneath the Jefferson Street bridge. The 8K starts at 7 a.m., and the Fun Run/Walk starts at 8:15 a.m. See the Community Calendar for more details, or call MELD at (815) 965-8336. If you’d rather eat than run, Radio 91-WGSL is hosting a Patriotic Breakfast at the Bandshell in Sinnissippi Park. The first 1,000 people receive a free continental breakfast, with a talk by Ltc. Steve Russell (Ret.) following.

Gates at Davis Park open at 5 p.m. for the SkyConcert (starting at 9:30 p.m.). Admission to Davis Park for the Fourth is $6 for everyone older than 5 (younger is free). Once inside, catch the Rockford Idol Singing Contest starting at 6:30 p.m.

Last, but not least, everyone’s favorite… the parade! This year’s route starts at Seventh Street and Sixth Avenue at 7 p.m. Be sure to get there early and bring your chairs!
