8th Annual Scarecrow Festival—In downtown Dixon, Ill., Saturday, Sept. 20. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The Dixon Main Street Promotion Committee proudly presents this autumn fair that will offer a car show, a family fun fair, a pet contest, Art on The Square and a beer garden with live music (until 1:30 a.m.). Fall 2003 O-Galena! Orienteering Festival—Oak Hill Farm, Jo Daviess County, Ill., Oct. 4 – 5. A leisurely walk in the woods using maps and compasses, or a competitive autumn run. Call for times/info: 815/777-3557, ext. 11.

Edwards’ Apple Orchard—7061 Centerville Rd., Poplar Grove. A great selection of monthly apple harvests, as well as pumpkins (later) and corn. Their donuts are to die for, and the cider is phenomenal. Edgebrook Center’s Cider & Cinnamon Arts & Crafts Fair—Edgebrook Center, 1639 N. Alpine Rd. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 4 – 5, from 10 a.m. to noon and noon to 4 p.m. A seasonal event featuring hot and cold cider, donuts, coffee, etc., as well as anything from hand-painted furniture to clothing.
