Fiesta Hispana turns up the heat July 29-31

Explore the taste, sound and culture of the Hispanic community Friday, July 29-Sunday, July 31 at Fiesta Hispana 2005.

This year’s festival at Sportscore Two, 8800 E. Riverside Blvd., Loves Park, offers live music, food, fun, games and prizes. Three-day buttons ($7) are available in advance at the Rockford Park District Main Office, 1401 N. Second St.; La Canasta, 514 S. State St., Belvidere; Novedades Azteca, 815 E. State St.; and Taco Loco, 1122 S. Main St. Buttons can be purchased online at Tickets are $10 at the gate each day of the festival. Children 8 and younger are admitted free.

Other contests and fun include the following:

Queen Pageant—Saturday. Lovely senoritas compete for the title of Miss Fiesta Hispana 2005. Prizes are $300 for Miss Fiesta Hispana; $200 first runner-up; $100 second runner-up; and $75 third runner-up.

Jalapeno Pepper Eating Contest—Sunday. Daredevils wanted! How many jalapenos can you eat in one minute? Number of contestants is limited, so sign up early at the information tent. There is no entry fee. Prizes are $100 for first prize and $50 second.

Grito “Yelling” Contest—Saturday. To the loudest, grand-slam yeller goes the first-place prize of $75, second place $50 and third place $25. Number of contestants is limited, so sign up early at the information tent.

Carnival Rides—Wristband specials are available. Buy a wristband, good for one day, for $15, and enjoy carnival rides from 6-10 p.m. Friday; 2-6 p.m. Saturday; and 2-6 p.m. Sunday.

Dance Contest—Saturday. Get into the groove. Step out in style. Grab a partner and enter the dance contest to win a $100 first prize.

Fiesta Hispana is a voluntary not-for-profit organization established in 1983 for the purpose of sharing the heritage and culture of Spanish-speaking countries on an annual basis with residents of northern Illinois and Wisconsin by hosting an annual fiesta.
