Fifth Vegan benefit planned

Fifth Vegan benefit planned

The No Bones to Pick Committee will hold its fifth Vegetarian Restaurant benefit at 5 and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 320 South Fifth St., Rockford. Call Mary McNamara at (815) 969-7642 to reserve which time you prefer.

Special guest chef will be Brian Kramer, a chef for Giovanni’s. This will be a Cajun theme in honor of Mardi Gras. Local DJ Randy Locke will provide music. There is no set price for the meal, but a free will offering will be taken.

The “No Bones” not-for-profit committee hopes to start a vegan restaurant that will serve low-cost meals in the Seventh Street area. “The hope is, we will be able to operate a combined soup kitchen and restaurant in one facility,” said Stanley Campbell, member of the committee.

The meal will be served in the church’s Mission House, a soup kitchen that serves lunch on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays. Chef Brian will prepare a wonderful vegan meal of Cajun cole slaw and Creole beans and rice, with a vegan pudding for dessert. A vegan meal is one prepared without any animal products such as eggs or milk. Volunteer Stephanie Motz has been sprucing up the Mission House by painting, repairing and improving the decor. She stated, “It looks nice, but we still need some curtains.”

No Bones to Pick is sponsored by Rockford Urban Ministries and Vegetarians In Motion, which plans to contribute benefit meals until they get enough to rent space and hire a small staff for an “open donation” vegetarian restaurant. “We are still in the planning stages and hope to find some models around the country to work from,” said McNamara.

If you wish to reserve a place, call 969-7642. Reservations are not required, but will be helpful in planning. A free will offering will be accepted.
