Final Historical Walk-About set for Oct. 15

River District offers tour of ‘Mall and Beyond’

The River District Association’s third annual series of Historical Walk-Abouts completes its season Saturday, Oct. 15 with a focus on “The Mall and Beyond.” The outdoor walking tours are free and open to the public.

This mall may not be home to Old Navy or Abercrombie and Fitch, but it is home to great locally-owned gift shops, stages, studios, and eateries. The River District’s very own pedestrian mall was once considered Rockford’s premier shopping destination. Find out what stores once anchored this area, and take a peek at the businesses that can be found here today.

Patrons will learn when the street was closed, and discuss future options for this concrete oasis.

Start time is 10 a.m. and will last about two hours. Those attending are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early. Meeting location is West State and North Main streets on the north side of the Pedestrian Mall. Free parking is available on street, and in nearby surface lot and parking decks. Reservations are not required.
