Cheri Stees of Lena has taken the Best of Show Award at the annual Winnebago County Fair Photographic Competition and Exhibition. Stees entry, Mothers Hearts, is an intensely colored and beautifully composed close-up of a spray of bleeding heart blossoms taken in the photographer¹s own backyard. Her entry was chosen best of 189 on exhibit in this years competition. Judge for the exhibit was noted Milwaukee Master Photographer Jon Allyn.
Though Stees grew up taking snapshots and was encouraged by a father who loves photography, it is only within the last year that she has gotten serious about the medium.
Ive always been interested in different forms of art, and have done watercolors from photographs in the past, Stees said, but about a year ago, Dad gave me his old camera and challenged me to record things for him that he always wanted to photograph.
Preparation for actually taking the winning photograph involved considerable visualization and waiting for just the right light to fall on the blooms and the water droplets on the flower.
My family is used to seeing me crawling around on the ground to get the picture I want, Stees said. Close-ups and flowers are one of my interests, but since Ive begun experimenting in this medium, everything fascinates me and Im learning a new way to see.
The photographic exhibition continued throughout Fair Week, ending Sunday at 5 p.m., August 18, at the Winnebago County Fairgrounds in Pecatonica.
