Youth NFL Flag Football will hold its third annual preseason football camp Saturday, May 20, at Brown Park, North Main Street and Custer Avenue, just a couple blocks north of Auburn Street.
Training camp is open to boys and girls ages 5-15. Coaches from Northern Illinois University, Rock Valley College, Rockford College and Rockford high schools will instruct participants on fundamental football techniques.
Community leaders will also talk to participants about life skills, education and peer pressure. There will also be giveaways and events for the parents. Registration is $20.
Emery Morehead, tight end on the 1986 Super Bowl Chicago Bears team, will be a guest speaker.
The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with registration starting at 8 a.m.
All participants will receive a free T-shirt and free lunch. It is recommended that all participants wear cleats and shorts.
Participants may register for the training camp at www.eteamz.com/nflrockford or 987-1986.
There is still time to register for the league, which starts in June. League fee is $15, due at registration. Local program is run by Lamont Jones and Greg Taylor for boys and girls ages 6-14 to develop the first phase of player and coach development by teaching football skills at an early age with no contact (no tackling).
All games are Saturdays starting June 10 at 9 a.m. at Brown Park, which is three blocks north of Auburn Street.
NFL Flag Football was created about nine years ago by the National Football League, and this will be the third year in the Rockford area. Each week, there will be a 15-minute chalk talk with a special guest talking about education and sports.
All participants will also participate in the Punt, Pass and Kick Competition and the 10-week season. Participants will receive an NFL jersey, a set of flags, an award, post-season camp and a league picnic. All 9-11- and 12-14-year-olds are eligible to compete in the Chicago Bears Regional NFL Flag Football competition.
