DEKALBThis summer marks the Sixth Annual Gurler Heritage Association Folk Music Fest, set for noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, June 17, on the lawn of the Gurler House, 205 Pine St., DeKalb.
Event features four acts, including Dave Balika and Friends (noon to 12:45 p.m.), Jen Jencks Conley (1-1:45 p.m.), the Basically Bluegrass Band (2-3 p.m.), McNamara & Neeley (3:15-4:15 p.m.) and Small Potatoes (4:30-5:45 p.m.).
The afternoon will offer something for everyone, ranging from rousing group instrumentals and vocals from Balika and Friends, to crystal-clear guitar and melodies sung by Jencks Conley, to old-time toe-tapping bluegrass hollers from the Basically Bluegrass Band.
Newcomers to the Gurler Folk Music Fest are McNamara & Neeley, a duo well known in regional folk circles, whose blend of acoustic instrumentals and vocals has been called a scrumptious musical feast.
Returning after a fine performance at last years event, the final act will be the Chicago-based group Small Potatoes, consisting of Rich Prezioso and Jacquie Manning, who describe their music as Celtic to Cowboy. Eclectic and engaging, they offer an expertly played and superbly sung mix of musical styles, ranging from country, blues and swing to Irish.
In addition to the great group of performers, there will be a food tent featuring Chicago-style hot dogs, baked goods and cold drinks.
The event is free and open to the public, although free-will donations to support the historic house are appreciated. Bring blankets or chairs. In the event of rain, the concert will be at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship, 158 N. Fourth St., DeKalb.
