Darcee Schmidt, former Machesney Park Harlem High School basketball star, is now a senior at Lewis University in Edwardsville, Ill. Last Saturday night, she had a career-high 35 points as she helped her Flyers defeat the previously unbeaten Cougars from SIU-Edwardsville.

Schmidt shot 75 percent from the field (15 of 20) and was five of seven from 3-point land. She did not have a single free throw attempt during the game. In addition to her outstanding scoring effort, she also grabbed nine rebounds, handed out three assists and added one blocked shot.

Her 35 points is only five shy of the Lewis all-time record of 40, set by Carey Jewell during the 1999-2000 season. Her 15 field goals were two shy of the Lewis record of 17, set by Julie Fruendt in the 1984-85 season.

Schmidt and her fellow Flyers will be playing their next games in the Bahamas. They travel to the islands for a holiday tournament Dec. 18 against Wheeling Jesuit, and then face Hillsdale Dec. 20.

Schmidt is an elementary education major and the daughter of David and Doreen Schmidt of Machesney Park.
