Another week and another win for Indy Racing League (IRL) points leader Dario Franchitti.
After winning the inaugural Iowa Corn Indy 250 the previous weekend, Franchitti won the SunTrust Indy Challenge in Richmond, Va., Saturday, June 30.
On the way to his second win in a row, he managed to set three different IRL records. He led 242 of 250 laps on the 3/4-mile track, the most ever in IndyCarSeries history. His average speed during the race was 133.408 mph, a track record. On lap 75, he set the fastest race lap by a leader at 163.821 mph.
After nine races of the 17-race season, Franchitti has a 65-point lead over Scott Dixon. Tied for third are Dan Wheldon and Tony Kanaan, both 72 points behind Franchitti. Roscoe native Danica Patrick finished sixth at Richmond, and remains in eighth place in the season standings, 213 in back of Franchitti.
The series will be in action again Sunday, July 8, at Watkins Glen, N.Y., for the 60-lap/204-mile Watkins Glen Grand Prix. The race will be televised locally on ABC beginning at 2:30 p.m.
