StoryImage( ‘/Images/Story//img-fy2vkao7U6.jpg’, ‘Photo courtesy of’, ‘A key challenge facing local governments has been addressing waste tire disposal and recovery. Unlike most types of solid waste, waste tires cannot be simply landfilled without first being processed. This contributes to illegal dumping and the development of tire stockpiles. Discarded tires present a variety of hazards for the environment and public health, including providing habitat for disease-carrying vectors and creating the potential for fires at both illegal dumps and regulated tire stockpiles. ‘);

Old tires are a nuisance, an eyesore and also create a breeding ground for mosquitoes that can carry West Nile virus and encephalitis.

It’s time to clean up that nuisance and health hazard! A free tire recycling drive will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 19, at the Boone County Fairgrounds on McKinley Avenue in Belvidere.

This tire recycling program is open to any Illinois resident who has NOT previously participated in the Illinois EPA tire recycling program. A valid Illinois driver’s license will be required to drop off tires.

Tires of all sizes accepted.

No more than 1,000 tires per property owner. Township and other local governments may participate. Businesses that collect and/or recycle tires are NOT eligible to participate.

The event is sponsored by the Boone County Health Department and the Illinois EPA in cooperation with the Boone County Granges.

Info: Bill Hatfield of the Boone County Health Department at 544-2952.
