The Rockford Area Literacy Council is in great need of literacy tutors; more than 100 adult learners are currently on a waiting list to be matched with a tutor. Three free tutor training sessions will be held in the Rockford area this winter to help meet this need:

l Saturdays: Jan. 12, 19 and 26, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at North Suburban District Library in Loves Park.

l Weeknights: Feb. 4, 6, 11, 13, 18 and 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. at RALC at 982 N. Main St. (corner of Main and Napoleon) in Rockford.

l Weekdays: Feb. 25 and 27, and March 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at RALC.

In a workshop, literacy volunteers will learn techniques for teaching reading and writing to adult learners. After completing the training, tutors are matched with students in their area for one-on-one individual instruction. The RALC, a nonprofit corporation, is the only organization in the area that offers free instruction to adults wishing to improve their reading, writing and English language skills.

Call the RALC at (815) 963-READ (7323) for more information or to register, or visit the website at www.comportone/ralc.
