Freeport Arts Center offers painting workshop

FREEPORT—Go to the Freeport Arts Center (FAC) for an exciting painting workshop with Galena artist Sandra Principe.

The day-and-a-half workshop will focus on floral and still-life compositions, and is open to all paint media: oil, acrylic, pastels and watercolor.

Principe welcomes all skill levels, from beginner to advanced artists. The workshop is designed for adults, but also welcomes serious-minded teens. The full day begins with painting, providing individual as well as group instruction, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, June 2 in the FAC Education Classroom. Make sure to bring a sack lunch. The FAC has a refrigerator available, if needed. The workshop concludes from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sunday, June 3. Supply lists for each media are available at the FAC office.

Principe’s oil paintings capture the timeless beauty of flowers closely observed. Principe’s paintings capture a glowing light, illuminating the exquisite coloration and delicate form of the orchids and other flowers she paints. Principe’s paintings are reminiscent of the American painter Martin Johnson Heade.

Principe’s paintings are included in numerous private and corporate collections. Her work has been shown in solo shows across the country, from Clarke Galleries in West Palm Beach, Fla., to Laguna Beach, Calif. Her paintings are now in great demand, with a commissioned waiting list. She is represented by The Red House Gallery in Dubuque, Iowa, Meghan Candler Gallery in Vero Beach, Fla., and Principe Studio Gallery in Galena.

Cost for participants is $50 for FAC members and $75 for non-members. A $25 deposit is required by the registration deadline of Friday, May 18. This workshop has limited enrollment.

FAC is at 121 N. Harlem Ave., and is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday-Friday; and noon-5 p.m., Saturday. Tours may be scheduled by calling 815-235-9755 or e-mailing For more information, visit
