GALENAOne of the Galena Artists Guilds most beloved and most distinguished artists will be honored as the Guild kicks off a special Gallery Grand Opening Weekend the first weekend in May.
Friday, May 4, Levon Jackman will be the featured artist at a First Friday reception from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Galena Elks Club, 123 N. Main St., Galena. The event is free and open to the public; Guild members supply appetizers and sweets, and the Elks operates a cash bar.
A Dubuque native, Jackman is a 1946 Purdue graduate who studied art at the University of Minnesota and has continued through the years to hone her skill at numerous workshops led by nationally-known artists. Her works have been displayed at galleries from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Monroe, Wis., and can now be found in more than 300 private and corporate collections.
The love of nature has always been my inspiration, she said. Many of my paintings begin as nothing more than areas of chosen colors, upon which I can elaborate and eliminate until I arrive at the finished work.
Recalling her Dubuque childhood, she noted, The imprint of the Mississippi River and the hills and bluffs has never left me. A quarter century ago, she returned to the area where she grew up. Since then, she has been a leading force in the local arts community and a prolific artist. Former owner and manager of the Rivertrace Gallery on Galenas Main Street, she has been an energetic member of the committee for the Galena Artists Guild Gallery, which will have its grand opening May 5.
Galena Artists' Guild Gallery Grand Opening May 5
Saturday, May 5, the Guild formally opens the Galena Artists Guild Gallery at 324 Spring St., with a public reception from 6 to 8 p.m. This event caps the huge job of transforming a former wicker furniture store into a clean, well-lighted space for art.
Along with Jackman, other committee members are Chairman Sally Bischel, Guild President Janet Checker, Maureen Bardusk, Mark Skidmore, Joan Wallace and Dwight Walles.
Galena has long been described as an artists colony, and the addition of the Artists Guild Gallery cements that reputation, said Bischel. It has been some years since the Guild had gallery space, and we are thrilled at this new location on the highly visible Spring Street Corridor that includes convenient across-the-street parking for a row of arts destinations.
The Gallery is open Thursdays-Mondays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays), phone (815) 777-2870. All of the art exhibited and for sale at the Gallery is created by Guild members and juried by a committee of member artists. On view are paintings in various media, prints, sculpture, ceramics and jewelry. In addition, the Gallery sells art cards and a number of artists prints, many depicting Galena scenes.
Founded more than three decades ago by leading artists in the historic, scenic, arts-friendly town of Galena, the Galena Artists Guild Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation that promotes the arts and artists in Galena and the surrounding areas. The Guild operates a gallery at 324 Spring St. (815-777-2870), sponsors events featuring member art, gives annual scholarships to students pursuing art studies and supports many local arts projects.
