The fruit smasher is coming to Rockford College, Friday, Oct. 28, so bring your goggles and protective plastic wear. Gallagher, internationally-known comedian, was supposed to give me an interview last Friday, but he spaced it. It was all right because he called later to apologize and I decided not to hold it against him. He mentioned that he had opened for Kenny Rogers in Rockford a long time ago and loved our fair city. He was disappointed to hear that we rated so high on unemployment, though.
Last year, Gallagher had a scheduled performance at Belvidere High School, but the show never happened due to some complaints that he would ruin the new auditorium with his Sledge-O-Matic. Also, apparently food and drink are not allowed in the theater, which appears to be the final word that ended Gallaghers contract with the school. According to Theater Director Dan Holmes, Due to administrative response to a few peoples complaints, we had to re-examine the contract, and could not come to an agreement.
Well, at least Rockford College doesnt mind the mess, and no one has complained yet. By this point, the whole world is probably familiar with Gallaghers performance style, his strangely abrupt mannerisms, and mix of social and political commentary within the context of comedy. I never really understood the watermelon smashing bit, but crowds seem to go nuts for it, so he must be doing something right.
Gallagher will perform Oct. 28 in the Seaver Gymnasium at Rockford College. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets cost $30 (with discount rates for students and seniors). Gallagher will be available to meet before the show, sign autographs and have pictures taken. Tickets are available by calling the Rockford College 226-4100 or online at www.rockford.edu.
