Garden Conservancy’s Open Days includes Rockford gardens

COLD SPRING, NY—Have you ever caught a glimpse of another gardener’s handiwork… a quick look over a hedge, through an arch, or down a tree-lined drive… and longed to be invited through the gate for a closer look? The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program provides the passkey to hundreds of these enchanting private domains. In 2002, the Open Days Program will include more private gardens (453) to visit than ever before in 26 states nationwide.

Eight captivating private gardens in the Rockford area will open their gates to the public on June 22. As you enter through a vine-covered pergola at the Ewaldz Garden, the scent of 200 rosebushes captivates you, including hybrid teas, floribundas, David Austin’s and heirloom varieties. At Sheila’s English Cottage Garden, the owner has tried to create a “little bit of England” in Illinois, featuring window boxes, birdhouses, and lots of garden whimsy. The Clausen Garden boasts an extensive collection of rare and unusual perennials displaying an artfully woven tapestry of brilliant color combinations, abundance of bloom, diversity of foliage textures and heady fragrances.

Visitors may begin their tour at the Ewaldz Garden, 2922 Carriage Lane, Rockford, or Ancient Oaks, 5550 E. Canfield Rd., Chana, both 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to each garden is $5, the Open Day is rain or shine, and no reservations are required. Call 1-888-842-2442 for more information and wheelchair accessibility.

These gardens are listed in the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Directory, a 512-page book that includes detailed driving directions and vivid descriptions of each garden written by their owners. The 2002 edition costs $15.95 ($10.95 for Garden Conservancy members) plus $4.50 for shipping. Discount coupons are available through advanced mail order only.
