Jerry “The Cigar Man” Gille became the sixth different driver in nine races to win a NASCAR Late Model feature this season at Rockford Speedway. Last Saturday night, June 23, the veteran driver from Roscoe earned his first victory of the 2007 season by finishing ahead of Jon Reynolds Jr. Defending track champion Ricky “The Rocket” Bilderback finished third. Brett “The Wild Man” McCoy and Nick “He’s a Good Boy” Shutkas rounded out the top five.

“Racin’” Freddy Nason won his second feature win of the year in the All-American Sportsman division. He was able to hold off long-time rival Doug Bennett for the victory. Brandon Eash came home third. Darrell Garman finished fourth, and Butch “You Can Take it to the” Swinbank was fifth.

In the American Short Tracker division, Matt “Ham” Berger captured his second checkered flag of the season. Berger made his move to the front of the pack about halfway through the 25-lap feature, and stayed there the remainder of the race to finish ahead of the Sparkman brothers—Boyce “BJ” Sparkman, who finished second, and George Sparkman, who finished third. Tim Melvin and Kelly Evink also finished in the top five.

After starting in the seventh position for the Road Runner feature, John Logan Jr. worked his way to the lead during the first five laps of the race. He had to fend off current points leader Charlie “The Tuna” Frisch for the remaining 15 laps to earn his third feature of the year.

The Formula Indy Racing Association was also at the track last weekend. Johnny Zielinga won their feature.

The 60th consecutive season of racing continues tonight (Wednesday, June 27) and Saturday, June 30. Race time both nights is 7:07 p.m. For competing divisions and event specials, call the Rockford Speedway office at (815) 633-1500.
