The Harlem Globetrotters and the U.S. Department of Education will start their third consecutive year of the Character Education program (C.H.E.E.R.) with a stop in Rockford.

A member of the Harlem Globetrotters will appear Wednesday, Dec. 14, at A.C. Thompson Elementary School, 4949 Marion Ave., to promote Character Education and to express the importance of physical fitness.

Kevin Daley, forward for the Harlem Globetrotters, was chosen to speak with the students in Rockford. This is Daley’s second season with the team.

The students seem to be taking the visit very well. Emma Gentry, principal of A.C. Thompson Elementary School, said because of the age of students, it may take seeing Daley in his uniform to remember what the Harlem Globetrotters are.

She said the staff “feels that it’s something that is greatly needed.”

The A.C. Thompson Elementary School’s motto follows some of the same lines as the Globetrotters C.H.E.E.R. program.

“We have some of those words in our vocab that we use daily with our students,” Gentry said.

All students attending the school will be able to participate in the event. Each student will receive a knowledge wheel that will give them a positive goal each time they spin it.

“I know it’s going to be a really cool event,” Gentry said.

As a whole, the Harlem Globetrotters have been around for decades. The team is most known for its show antics, but it is a real professional basketball team with a good amount of talent.

Founded in 1926 by Abe Saperstein, the Globetrotters were pioneers in the field of basketball, exposing millions of people to the game for the first time. Since then, they have played in 117 countries in front of millions of fans. Rockford’s own McKinley “Deacon” Davis donned the Globetrotters red, white and blue from 1955 to 1957.

The Harlem Globetrotters’ visit to A.C. Thompson Elementary will be strictly for the students. However, Daley will be at the downtown Rockford YMCA, 220 W. Locust, from 3:30-4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 14 for the public to meet.

The game following the appearance will be Jan. 1, 2006, at the Rockford MetroCentre, 300 Elm St. Tickets and info: 968-5222.
