Got a sports-related tattoo? Send us a photo

This past weekend, I was watching the movie Are We Done Yet? starring Ice Cube. One of the supporting characters in the movie claimed to have played for the Los Angeles Lakers and even had their logo tattooed on his shoulder. I don’t know if it was real or Hollywood make-up. That started me wondering how many people in our reading area might have a sports-related tattoo.

I have one that I got about four years ago. The artwork I used was from a picture in a Bears merchandise catalog. I took it to Josh at Delicious Ink on Charles Street, and he was able to recreate it on my right upper shoulder.

The first thing most people say when they see it is, “Is that real?” After assuring them that it is, then they either say, “That’s pretty cool!” or “That’s really stupid!” Most of the time, the people who think it’s stupid aren’t sports fans and don’t understand why anyone would get any kind of tattoo, let alone one of the Chicago Bears.

I know tattoos are becoming increasingly popular in today’s society. They are much more common than 10 years ago. That leads me to believe there must be some really cool sports-themed ones out there adorning the bodies of area sports fans. I’d like to see them and share them with our readers.

If you or someone you know has a cool tattoo that has anything to do with sports, e-mail me a photo of the tattoo ( and your name, along with a little history about what motivated you to get it done, where you had it done, what other people have said about it, etc. I want to do a future story about some of the best of them and include the photos.

Photos and stories can also be mailed to The Rock River Times, ATTN: Doug Halberstadt, 128 N. Church St., Rockford, IL 61101.
