Green Thumb offers seniors opportunity

On-the-job training and employment opportunities for individuals 55 years of age or older are available through the Green Thumb program.

“Our goal is to improve the social and economic conditions of older Americans by promoting employment and training opportunities. We can accomplish this in two ways,” said Dan Kalina, field operations coordinator. “We can assign people to community service jobs that will help them upgrade their existing skills, or acquire new skills, ultimately leading to their employment off the program, or we can help to find them a position in the private sector.”

Green Thumb, Inc., is a nonprofit corporation that operates in 44 states and Puerto Rico as a job training and employment program for older Americans. When it was developed in 1965, Green Thumb put into service the “Green Thumbs” of older Americans to beautify the nation’s parks and highways. Today, Green Thumb has more than 26,000 participants nationwide being trained to operate computers, teach skilled trades and crafts, give basic health care, answer phones and bookkeeping—just to mention a few services they provide at more than 15,000 local government and nonprofit agencies.

In this area, Green Thumb is represented by Normajeanne Osborn, IETC, 3134 11th St., Rockford, IL 61109. The phone number is (815) 395-6600, ext. 331. Americans 55 and older who are seeking employment and who meet federal income guidelines are invited to contact Ms. Osborn.
