Guitarists unite to help Alzheimer’s Association

Three Rockford-area guitarists known for their virtuosity and charismatic styles of playing will combine forces Sunday, July 29 to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association-Greater Illinois Chapter. The event will be at 1 p.m. at The Rock Box, 317 W. Jefferson St., Rockford. Guitarists Clark Colborn, Mark Maffioli and Shawn Williams, along with their bands, will perform a concert known as “GX3.”

Each guitarist will perform a set, with all three joining together to play a “super-jam” at the end. Modeled after the highly-successful G3 tours developed by guitar superstar Joe Satriani, the GX3 concert will feature lots of guitar solos and plenty of showmanship.

“Don’t expect the dreck that nearly ruined rock guitar in the late ’80s and early ’90s,” says Clark Colborn. “Hearing a guitarist simply playing scales and arpeggios at light-speed is not what most fans of the instrument want to hear. Guitar fans want creativity, unique use of the guitar, good songs, and real melodies, all mixed in with tasteful use of blinding speed.”

Shawn Williams agrees: “Death-defying technique is worthless if you can’t entertain the audience.” And with black lights, body paint, fog and more, the show is sure to be very entertaining.

Mark Maffioli blends modern blues with jazz and shred techniques to engage his audience in a cross-over extravaganza. “This concert will provide something for every guitar lover, whether they are fans of blues, heavy guitar, shred or anything in between,” Maffioli said.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $14 at the door the day of the event and can be purchased at The Rock Box, Guzzardo Performance Music, and online at

from the July 25-31, 2007, issue
