Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, Habaneros Mexican Grill suffered severe water damage to its restaurant from leaks in the roof caused by negligent roofers. Monday, Sept. 4, with repairs still not completed to the restaurants roof, the restaurant received massive water damage from the severe storm that hit the Rockford area. More than 65 percent of the restaurant was destroyed.
Restoration of the restaurant took nearly four and a half months. More than 50 percent of the handmade furniture, decorations and traditional costumes imported from Mexico were destroyed. A semi-trailer load of new furniture and decorations was brought up from central Mexico to replace everything that was lost.
Habaneros is now back open for business. Owners James TerHark and Marianela Sanchez de TerHark have rebuilt Habaneros so it is bigger and better than before. The restaurant features a larger salsa bar, expanded dining room, a new and more extensive menu, and many new tequilas. Habaneros now features more than 200 tequilas! Live music will be from 6 to 9 p.m., both Friday and Saturday nights.
Restaurant hours are 4-10 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday; 11 a.m.-midnight, Friday-Saturday; and Sunday, 4-9 p.m.
