Harlem Middle School cagers raise money for toys

Twenty-seven girls from Harlem Middle School were in the spirit of the season Nov. 30 when they raised $1,500 to purchase toys for needy families in Harlem Township. The girls, who shot hoops for three hours in the gym, were members of the 7th and 8th grade basketball team.

The money was raised as part of the 4th annual “Toys for Kids”campaign, which donates toys to infants, toddlers, children and young adolescents who live in Harlem Township. Last year, Toys for Kids served 160 individuals from 50 families.

The girls earned money through flat-rate sponsorship, and for each successful shot. The group plans to distribute the toys Dec. 20.

Doug Aurand, supervisor for Harlem Township, said of the girls’ efforts: “It couldn’t have happened without them.”

Aurand said anyone interested in learning more about the program or who has questions about eligibility, may contact the Harlem Township office at 633-9382.
