Harvick outlasts Biffle for first Nextel Cup win in 39 races

Kevin Harvick brought his broom and two fast cars to Phoenix International Raceway this past weekend, April 21-22.

Harvick made it a clean sweep by winning Friday night’s Busch Series race, and then a little more than 24 hours later, he captured the checkered flag in the Nextel Cup series Subway Fresh 500 Saturday night.

In the Cup race, Harvick finished ahead of Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth. Greg Biffle was leading the race with 10 laps to go. In his attempt to conserve on fuel, he had to watch as Harvick raced past him for the lead. Biffle eventually ran out of gas with two laps remaining in the race.

Harvick’s last Nextel Cup victory was 39 races ago. He hadn’t had a win since the spring race at Bristol, Tenn., in 2005.

Kenseth is the current points leader going into the Sunday, April 30, race at Talladega. He is nine points ahead of Jimmie Johnson and 51 points in front of Kasey Kahne. Mark Martin and Stewart round out the top five.
