Holiday Update: GIVE, a Food Drive for Hunger Connection

By Molly Fleming, Staff Writer

The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes a realization to some that there are those in Rockford who will not have as much comfort and basic human needs as others in this time of celebration. In light of these circumstances, Keith Keister, local artist, musician, and patron, is organizing GIVE, a Food Drive for Hunger Connection, which will be Dec. 7, at Mary’s Place Tavern.

Keister is not just asking for donations, but will be giving something back to those in attendance. He has coordinated an evening of music and all around entertainment provided by Josh Parks-n’-Friends, who will perform an acoustic set, and The Mary’s Place All-stars, a spontaneously assembled group of regular musicians and patrons who perform at the tavern’s Tuesday and Thursday night open mic sessions.

From what has been rumored, the Mary’s Place All-stars should prove to be a funk/jam/folk mix-up with some of the best of Rockford’s underground musicians, as well as some well-known faces. Guest drummers are welcome to play between sets, so any percussionists or can-beaters should come prepared. All proceeds will go to Hunger Connection to provide food, winter coats and money for the less fortunate.

Hunger Connection is a not-for-profit organization that strives to feed the hungry through donations from the public. Two non-perishable or canned food items, a winter coat or a $3 donation admits guests to the evening’s entertainment. The entertainment begins at 10 p.m. and continues until bar close. Mary’s Place is located at 602 Madison St. For more information, call 815/962-7944.
