Hot Rhythm & Blues Night July 17

Charlotte’s Web Summer Series presents the Chicago Rhythm & Blues Kings at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 17 at Sinnissippi Park Music Shell.

This dynamic six-piece band “… continues to make soul music in the tradition of Solomon Burke, Tyrone Davis and Sam & Dave” (Blues Review), and have “the tightest horn section to blow out of the Windy City in decades!” (Reviews magazine).

The core of the band burst out of Carbondale in the early ’70s as Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows, then became The Mellow Fellows after Big Twist passed on. Now the Chicago Rhythm & Blues Kings since ’93, the band continues that tradition of soul-steeped R&B and hot, sizzling Chicago blues. With front man Ernie Peniston and his powerful pipes on lead vocals, Terry Ogolini—sax, Don Tenuto—trumpet, David Mick—guitar, bassist Bob Halaj and drummer Willie Hayes, the group enjoys a rabid following and much critical acclaim. Superlatives such as “skintight, stiletto-sharp rhythms,” “wicked instrumentals” and “luscious and lethal lyrics” are used to describe their style. “This is a joyful noise indeed” (The Holler). Guaranteed to be a hot, groovin’ evening under the stars!

All the Summer Series concerts are free. Rain sites are all at Memorial Hall (211 N. Main St.).
