House notes: TRRT places in three categories in statewide competition

For the second consecutive year, The Rock River Times (TRRT) has placed in three categories of the Illinois Press Association’s (IPA) Better Newspaper Contest.

The IPA, the largest statewide press association in the country with more than 600 daily and weekly newspapers from throughout the state, notified TRRT of the awards in a letter Aug. 10. Exact placements (first, second, third or honorable mention) within the categories will be announced at the IPA’s annual convention Oct. 13-14.

TRRT staff receiving recognition in this year’s awards include the following:

Cartoonist Charles Story, who received an honorable mention for his editorial cartoons in last year’s competition, placed in the same category this year;

Former columnist Phil Pash placed in the Sports Column category; and

Photographer James Thompson’s photograph of the Peking Acrobats from the Feb. 16-22, 2005, issue placed in the Feature Photo category.

TRRT, which joined the IPA in March 2004, is competing against other IPA non-dailies with a circulation of more than 10,000 newspapers.
