How to get your gigs in the paper

The other day, our office received a call from someone in a band complaining that out of “30 gig listings” he sent us, only a few had ever been printed. He did not leave a name or phone number, so it became a moot point.

In light of that phone call, I figured now was a good time to re-emphasize the fine print about band listing submissions.

The No. 1 reason some listings don’t get in is because of deadline. I am definitely sure the “Thursday at noon prior to the following Wednesday publication” is printed in italics beneath every entertainment calendar in our paper. Yet, I’ve got the bands who think Friday at 5 p.m. is a good time to get their listings in. It isn’t. My hands are tied; I have to abide by these deadlines.

The second biggest problem with getting listings in is that many bands do not have correct contact info. Our e-mail is, fax is 815/964-9825, and mailing address is 128 N. Church St., Rockford, IL 61101.

Following are some points to keep in mind:

Don’t assume the venue at which you are performing has taken care of business and sent me your listings. They rarely do, although some do submit listings religiously.

Some friendly advice to some of my favorite performers in town like Obie Call, Cozmic Donkey, SplitEndz and others: SEND ME YOUR LISTINGS! I see you people out and about on a weekly basis; you know how to get a hold of me.

Please send me all the information you can about your show. Don’t just send me an e-mail that reads: “Jimmy Shuckama this Sunday at the Irish Rose!” I would appreciate full listings as they read in the paper: “Jimmy Shuckama at The Irish Rose, Sunday, Feb. 27 from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. $3 cover. For information, call 299-2375.” Also, include a nice description of your band. The more information I have, the more likely you are to get more coverage than just a calendar blurb.

I hope this helps some of you. I know it will certainly help me if some of you pay attention to these suggestions!
