ICC fines Ameritech again

The Illinois Commerce Commission has levied another fine against SBC/Ameritech for failure to meet quality standards. The ICC hit the telecommunications company with a fine of $474,497.
That brings the grand total of fines against SBC in the past two years to $31.65 million.
Despite these fines, and while allegedly blocking competition in the local telephone market, SBC continues to assert that it should be allowed into the long-distance market in Illinois.
Before the company can enter that market, it must pass a series of federal tests which evaluate SBC/Ameritechs service to competing local phone companies.
SBC has repeatedly failed these tests over the past 18 months, and earlier this month, SBC asked the ICC to ease the test requirements. The consulting firm which tested SBC to determine if its operational support systems are adequate for competing companies to access the network, has reported numerous shortcomings, including accuracy of data and timeliness in processing customer orders and repair requests.
