IceHogs advance to second round of playoffs

A Colonial Cup championship is now one step closer for the Rockford IceHogs.

The ’Hogs defeated the Quad City Mallards four games to one in the first round of the playoffs. They wrapped up the first round with a decisive 8-4 victory over the Mallards Sunday, April 22, in front of 2,658 fans at the Rockford MetroCentre.

The ’Hogs will now face the team they opened the 2006-07 season against. It was a Friday the 13th night way back in October when the Fort Wayne Komets defeated Rockford 4-2 to start the season. Now, the two Western Conference rivals will meet in the second round of the United Hockey League playoffs.

The first game of the best-of-seven series will be Friday, April 27. The two teams will take to the ice at 7 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Ind. Game two of the series will be played in Fort Wayne Sunday, April 29.

The ’Hogs had a regular season record of 3-5-1 against the Komets. They were 2-1-1 at the MetroCentre and 1-4 in Fort Wayne.
