Icemen state champs for 8th straight time

The Rockford Icemen are state champs for the eighth straight time.

They came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to beat Buffalo Grove/Wheeling 4-3 in Bensenville to win the AHAI/Blackhawk Cup High School Combined School Varsity Tournament.

They did it with their all-state player, sophomore Troy Mattila, spending most of the game on the bench with injuries. The line of Kyle Harris, Braden Norton and Paul Murray stepped up to produce all the Rockford goals. Harris, a junior, had a hat trick, and Norton scored the other goal.

Coach Tim Mattila’s team got to the title game by beating Lincoln-Way Central 6-1 in the semifinals as his son, Troy, had his third hat trick in three games. The Icemen downed the Cobras 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
