IDOT to replace bridge decks

The Illinois Department of Transportation will begin construction on the replacement of two deteriorated bridge decks on S. Alpine Road, starting when weather permits.

The project cost is $1,206,311. Sjostrom & Sons, which has been preparing for construction since December, will finish by Nov. 2.

“Everything is ready to go,” said Mahmoud Etemadi, the IDOT bridge maintenance engineer who will oversee the project. He said the last inspection in August 2000 determined that the decks needed to be replaced. The decks are concrete pieces that connect two bridges, which are a half mile south of Harrison Avenue and are located over a railroad crossing.

Traffic won’t be diverted during construction. “Traffic will be maintained in both directions,” Etemadi said.
