For several years a group called We the People Foundation for Constitutional Education has been challenging the legality of the federal income tax. Now they’re about to put it on trial.

In the next several weeks the grassroots organization plans to run ads in major newspapers and magazines announcing a congressionally sponsored public hearing on the issue on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

The group plans to present proof during the two-day hearing that the IRS does not have legal authority to make employers withhold taxes from employee paychecks, or to compel most Americans to file a tax return and pay taxes.

If their arguments are upheld publicly, the group says, most Americans may be entitled to a refund of all the income tax paid or withheld last year.

We the People is advising all Americans to wait on filing their tax returns until the public hearing takes place on Feb. 27. They advise all taxpayers to hear the facts and judge for

Arrangements are being made for a live webcast of the hearing. Internet users will be able to see and hear witnesses from the U.S. Department of Justice and the IRS as they answer questions about the income tax.

In addition to the newspaper and magazine campaign the group also intends to mail out materials to many millions of Americans. The direct mail campaign will be aimed at individuals, professional groups, politcal groups and institutions as well as media organizations.

Some of these contacts are expected to generate strong opposition. Groups that have a vested interest in the income tax industry are: the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants; the tax section of the American Bar Association; the National Federation of Independent Businesses; Libertarian Party members; all U.S. Senators, congressmen, Supreme Court Justices; federal cabinet members and state representatives across the country. Don’t forget the bureaucrats.

“Please help us in this historic fight for freedom,” the group says. “The personal income tax has no place in a society that believes in equality, fairness and the rule of law. The personal income tax has destroyed the integrity of our constitutional form of government and undermined our birthright as Americans-our right to life, liberty and property. With courage and determination we can, together, cause the bell of freedom to ring once again in America.”

We the People said it needs the support of many thousands of Americans and points out the cost of notifying the public through its planned campaigns will be very great. It seeks donations from interested citizens to finance the effort. The group said no member of the organization is paid and any monies received will go directly to pay for advertising and mailing materials.

Anyone interested in donating may contact: We the People Foundation for Constitutional Education, Inc., 2458 Ridge Rd., Queensbury, N.Y. 12804 They also ask the public to make copies of the proposed print ad, which can be found at, and distribute them near tax preparer companies, put them in supermarkets, truck stops or wherever people gather.

They also ask you write your public officials as well as the IRS and the Justice Department. Write a letter to the editor.
