Indie rock legend Calvin Johnson plays Rockford

Indie rock legend Calvin Johnson plays Rockford, Thursday, March 31 at Acme Records Books and Stuff, 3929 Broadway, Rockford. All ages are welcome.

Calvin Johnson is currently neck-deep in creating his new solo record. His new material promises to be a departure from the bare-bones nature of his only other solo record, What Was Me. Guests on the album will include Khaela Maricich (The Blow) and Mirah, as well as Jona Bechtolt (The Blow) adding his distinctive laptop beats. Johnny Jewel of Glass Candy will appear to produce one of the songs.

Despite the futility of trying to survive on creating DIY music, Calvin Johnson has built one of the longest and most successful careers in the independent music business. He started his first band, Beat Happening, and began his label, the legendary K, more than 20 years ago, and he shows no signs of slowing down. His unmistakable baritone voice has been a staple of indie music for more than two decades.

After Beat Happening, Johnson went on to form The Halo Benders with Doug Martsch of Built to Spill and is currently making records with Dub Narcotic Sound System. His first solo record, What Was Me, was released in 2002.
