Jail $7M to $9.3M more than estimate

New construction estimates have increased the cost of the county’s proposed jail to between $100 and $102.3 from the architect’s $93 million estimate last year. Gary Burdett, project director for the county’s new jail said he expects the cost to be about $100 million, but emphasized “market-driven factors” for products such as steel, and county board members’ decisions will ultimately determine the cost of the jail.

The jail is planned to be built in downtown Rockford. The 575,000- to 580,000-square feet, 900- to 1,212-bed jail is slated to open on Oct. 1, 2007.
