Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement holds clothing, toys, household items drive

The Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement at Rockford College is asking for donations of women’s and children’s clothing, toys and household items to aid families in the country of Tajikistan. Rockford College MBA student Mavjuda Mahkamova and native of Tajikistan, is heading up the project.

Donations may be dropped off now through March 31 at the Burpee Center, Colman Library or Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement, all on the campus of Rockford College. Monetary donations are also being accepted. Contact Mavjuda at (815) 394-4391 for more information.

According to the U.S. Department of State:

64 percent of Tajikistan population is below poverty level (2004 est.)

Unemployment rate in Tajikistan is 12 percent (2004 est.)

Approximately 1.5 million of the male labor force of Tajikistan migrated to Russia and neighboring countries looking for job opportunities.

Minimum wage in Tajikistan is $5.8/month (March 2006 est.)

Maximum pension is $55 per month.
