Mayoral candidate Dennis Johnson is endorsing legislation to reduce the state tax on gasoline by five percent.

“I am asking the governor and our state legislators to permanently extend the five percent reduction in the state sales tax on gasoline,” Johnson said. “With a substantial state budget surplus, the seniors and working families of the Rockford area deserve a break.”

A temporary reduction in the tax was enacted by the legislature this year and expires at the end of December.

“In addition to the savings to taxpayers, the reduction is especially important to Rockford and the stateline area,” Johnson said. “It helps make our local gas stations competitive with Wisconsin, which brings business from across the border.”

Johnson said he’s working with local legislators to spearhead local support for a sales tax reduction.
