Following his win in Richmond May 6, defending Nextel Cup champion Jimmie Johnson and his crew chief, Chad Knaus (formerly of Rockford), climbed into second place in the season points race. Despite finishing fourth at Richmond, Johnson’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon maintains a 211-point lead over Johnson in the season points standings.

The win at Richmond gave Johnson and Knaus their fourth victory of the season. The duo leads the series in victories.

After finishing second to Gordon at Talladega a week earlier, Johnson was finally able to get to victory lane at a track where he had only managed one top 10 finish in his last 15 starts.

Another Nextel Cup star with local ties is third in the standings. Matt Kenseth from Cambridge, Wis., is 49 points behind Johnson. Denny Hamlin and Jeff Burton round out the top five.

The series will be in Darlington for the Dodge Avenger 500 Saturday night, May 12. The race will be shown locally on FOX 39 beginning at 6 p.m.
