Bob “The Concrete Man” Kahler opened the 60th annual NASCAR weekly racing season at the Rockford Speedway last Saturday night, April 21, with a victory in the Late Model division.

Kahler won the 30-lap feature by holding off a late-race challenge by the night’s fast qualifier, Jerry Gille.

John Reynolds Jr. finished third, and defending track champion Ricky Bilderback secured a fourth-place finish. Brett McCoy rounded out the top five.

In the newly-named All-American Sportsmen (formerly known as the Grand Nationals), the defending division champion, Brock Behnke, won their 25-lap feature. Doug Bennett finished ahead of another former division champion, Fred Nason, for second. Ricky Nielson and Butch Swinbank took fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the American Short Tracker division, their 25-lap feature was cut short because of a large number of caution flags and time constraints. Tim Melvin took the first checkered flag of the season on lap eight. Aaron Rude finished second, and Randy Samples was third.

The final event of the evening was the 20-lap feature for the Road Runner division. Taking the checkered was John Logan Jr. He finished ahead of challengers Kris Nilson and Vachenzia Jester. Jester is a former champion in the Winged Women on Wheels division.

The track continues its 60th season this weekend with “Junior Nation Night.” Fans wearing any Dale Earnhardt Jr. attire will get a general grandstand ticket for $8. It is also Project First Rate Union Night at the track. Any union members who present their membership cards at the front gate will receive a general grandstand ticket for $5.

Gates open at 5 p.m. Qualifying begins at 6:10 p.m., and the first race is at 7:07 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or ahead of time by calling the Rockford Speedway box office at (815) 633-1500.
